Non-Profit Green Construction Technical Advisor (Richmond)

Overview: Viridiant is a growing, non-profit environmental organization that works to advance sustainable, affordable, and energy efficient construction.  The Technical Advisor (TA) provides hands-on technical assistance to participating builders and developers during design and in the field throughout construction. This non-supervisory position has the potential to grow with continuing education / certification and successful work performance. The TA reports to the Senior TA who reports to the Deputy Director.

Summary of Primary Job Responsibilities and Duties

  • Performs field construction inspections.
  • Analyzes and verifies green building program measures for program such as EarthCraft, ENERGY STAR, and Zero Energy Ready Home
  • Performs diagnostic testing such as blower door and duct blaster.
  • Provides construction technical assistance and guidance to builders and developers.
  • Completes administrative tasks including data entry, scheduling, and site visit reports.
  • Perform additional responsibilities related to the success of the organization

Key Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • High School diploma, some college preferred.
  • Minimum 2 – 3 years in the construction industry; Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.
  • Ability to read plans.
  • RESNET (national) certification plus architectural and energy modeling & analysis (software) experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of residential energy-efficient construction and green building practices, including diagnostic testing preferred.
  • Ability to self-manage daily scheduling of site visits and follow up tasks
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Organized and able to prioritize tasks with minimal direction
  • Enthusiastic about educating builders on Viridiant’s services and encouraging builder participation in programs.
  • A sense of urgency is a must.
  • Skilled with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as experience with CRM software (e.g., Salesforce.com) or related area;      able to readily learn new software programs; uses company laptop/iPad.
  • At construction / renovation work sites approximately 80% of time; locations are predominantly in Virginia; access to company vehicle for travel to / from project sites with minimal overnight travel.
  • Primarily at construction / renovation work site so the physical demands include, but not limited to standing, walking, climbing ladders, sitting, using hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Nominal time in an office work environment.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license; DMV record in good standing.
  • Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm; Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties and business demand.

Competitive Compensation Package including base salary of $47k – $58k per year and extensive benefits to include health, dental, life insurance, LTD, paid time off, paid holidays and retirement contributions! Salaries are based on experience and geographic location.

Based in Richmond, VA, Viridiant serves projects located throughout Virginia and into neighboring states. The The Technical Advisor (TA) provides building science-based technical assistance to participating builders and developers during design and in the field throughout construction. This role is part of a cross functional, collaborative construction project team. Projects range from 6 months to 24 months with a majority located in Virginia. This non-supervisory position has the potential to grow with continuing education / certification and successful work performance. The Technical Advisor reports to the Senior Technical Advisor (who reports to the Deputy Director).

  • Provides construction technical assistance and guidance to builders and developers.
  • Completes administrative tasks including data entry, scheduling, and site visit reports.

  • Perform takeoffs from architectural plans
  • Review construction documents and perform energy model projections
  • Coordinate and support Design Review facilitation

Key Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Some college; Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management preferred.  
  • Minimum 2 – 3 years in the construction industry; Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.
  • Proficiency reading architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans.
  • Experience in architectural and energy modeling & analysis software (e.g., Revit, Bluebeam, Procore) preferred.
  • RESNET Rater Field Inspector or HERS Certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of residential energy-efficient construction and green building practices preferred. 
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Enthusiastic about educating builders on Viridiant’s services and encouraging builder participation in programs.  
  • Skilled with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as experience with CRM software (e.g., Salesforce) or related area; able to readily learn new software programs.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize deadlines.
  • Excellent task management and organizational skills.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license; DMV record in good standing.
  • Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm.

Building Science Field Technician (Part-time)

Position Summary: Viridiant is a non-profit environmental organization that works to advance sustainable, affordable, and energy efficient construction.  The Building Science Field Technician will provide technical assistance to participating builders and developers during design and in the field throughout construction.

  • Assists Technical Advisors or Senior Technical Advisors
  • Performs diagnostic testing such as blower door, duct blaster, and ventilation flow rates. 
  • With the guidance of a Technical Advisor or Senior Technical Advisor, provides construction technical assistance and guidance to builders and developers.
  • Completes administrative tasks including data entry, scheduling, and site visit reports.
  • Performs additional responsibilities related to the success of the organization.

Job Requirements and Qualifications (education and experience)

  • Minimum High School diploma; some college preferred.  
  • Experience in the construction industry preferred
  • Ability to read plans preferred. 
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organized and able to prioritize tasks with minimal direction.
  • Enthusiastic about educating builders on Viridiant’s services and encouraging builder participation in programs.  
  • A sense of urgency is a must.

Work Environment, Travel and Expected Work Hours

This position is performed in the field in a construction work environment. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties and business demand. At construction / renovation work sites approximately 80% of time; locations are predominantly in Virginia with minimal overnight travel. Nominal time in an office work environment. Total working hours will be between 15 and 20 hours per week.
