Lecture: Building Science Principals in Light Commercial Enclosures

This course is offered in-person in Richmond and virtually via webinar. It is approved for 2 HSW AIA credits, and lunch will be provided for those attending in person.

Presentation from Huber Engineered Woods:
A study of how air leakage affects thermal performance and how moisture is managed in typical light commercial construction. Study focuses on roof and wall applications. Also includes discussion about some of the shortcomings of traditional methods and introduces The ZIP System® as an alternative solution for protecting the structure from air and moisture intrusion.
Learning objectives:
At the end of the program, participants should be able to identify the benefits of air and water-resistant barriers. Participants will recognize how wall systems are susceptible to vapor and liquid water intrusion and understand how to protect the structure from it. Also, participants will be able to identify alternative methods for managing air and moisture in light commercial construction to avoid today’s most common pitfalls.

This course introduces participants to key building science principals in high performance light commercial enclosures. The primary topics covered in this course include: 1) an overview of the EarthCraft Light Commercial program, 2) how to plan, design, construct, and test enclosures, 3) lessons learned from testing, and 4) the discussion of three case studies. Following this course, participants will be better prepared to produce high performance light commercial enclosures which lead to enhanced indoor environmental quality for occupants.
