Advancing Skills in Whole-Home Performance
Building Expertise That Lasts
At Viridiant, we know excellence in building science doesn’t happen by accident—it comes from continual learning, rigorous practice, and a shared commitment to doing things the right way. This summer, our entire team put that belief into action by completing an intensive three-week RESNET HERS® Rater training led by nationally recognized building science expert Mike Barcik of Southface Institute.
This training went far beyond a surface-level refresher. Our staff dug into every aspect of high-performance home verification, from HVAC diagnostics to moisture management, insulation grading, and whole-house energy modeling. We reaffirmed our commitment to core principles: understanding the house as a system, using data to drive decisions, and keeping the homeowners’ comfort, health, and long-term savings at the center.
Connecting the Whole Home
Why invest this time and effort? A whole-house approach recognizes the full system that includes heat, air, and moisture in real-world conditions. It means connecting the dots across framers, insulators, mechanical systems, plumbing, etc, making sure every system works in harmony. That’s the role we proudly play for our clients as an independent advocate who sees the big picture and ensures that no detail is overlooked in pursuit of performance and comfort.
We are committed to developing our own workforce at Viridiant, as well as strengthening the industry as a whole. We know that the next generation of building professionals will be stepping into a world with higher energy standards, evolving codes, and a greater need for precision and accountability. Therefore, out training goes beyond theory, embedding field-tested practices and hands-on problem-solving skills that can be applied on job sites every day.
By equipping our team with a deep and shared technical foundation, we ensure that every Viridiant project, whether it’s a new construction multifamily development or existing home, benefits from a science-based approach. And by sharing our expertise in the field or in the classroom, we’re helping to empower a broader workforce that is equally committed to high-performance housing.
Raising the Bar for the Industry
We’ve seen firsthand the impact that cohort-based training can have, bringing together professionals from different roles, backgrounds, and perspectives, and uniting them around a shared understanding of building science. We are now actively exploring ways to expand these opportunities in our region, so more builders, raters, tradespeople, and designers can access the kind of deep-dive training we just completed.
When the whole industry levels up, everyone wins – builders, designers, homeowners, and the environment. We’ll continue investing in the training and expertise that help make better buildings, and better outcomes, possible.
